Mathematics

Curriculum Statement

The study of Mathematics enables each individual within society to understand and solve problems in a variety of contexts. Here at COLAHG we aim to deliver a curriculum that will inspire and enable each student to reach their full potential and be able to utilise their skills for years to come. As a team of maths specialists and enthusiasts we hope to instil positivity towards mathematics in all of our students, raising their awareness to the fact that being numerate is one of the most valued skills in the working world. Our curriculum is designed so that core knowledge is built upon each year with specific opportunities for students to recall facts, to become fluent in carrying out mathematical procedures, to develop their ability to reason and to practise solving problems that are unfamiliar and challenging. As students move through each year their fluency within each of the Mathematics strands, Number, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Shape and Measure, Data handling and Probability, will develop and they will become confident in their ability to reason and problem solve within and across each of these strands both in mathematical and real life contexts.

Our teachers foster high expectations and are committed to teaching engaging lessons where all students have the opportunity to progress and grow and to enjoy Maths, regardless of ability or background.

Our KS3 Mastery curriculum will promote conceptual understanding across a range of topics with a core focus on building strong foundations in Number and Algebra and ensuring lasting knowledge. This will prepare students for higher levels of challenge and breadth in KS4, facilitating success and the development of well-rounded mathematicians, where some will continue onto Maths A-level.

Within each programme of study there is a commitment to supporting students to develop their literacy both through the use of specific mathematical language and through studying content that requires students to read and comprehend the nature of a problem. We also aim to show students that being a confident and competent mathematician can create some of the most exciting future learning experiences and career opportunities. There will be explicit links to careers within each programme of study as well as opportunities to take part in Maths competitions and trips.
