BTEC Art and Design

Exam Board: EDEXCEL

Course Outline

We offer the highest standard of BTEC available: Level 3 BTEC Nationals (equivalent to 3 A-levels). In this qualification, all students cover 7 mandatory units. These units are an expansion of the design process learnt at GCSE, but with a significantly higher focus on what the “creative intention” means. All units require students to research artists, and experiment with media to explore their creative intention. This is regularly reviewed and refined with group and 1:1 feedback and support.

BTEC offers the opportunity to gain the equivalent of three A-levels, universally accepted by universities and apprenticeships. The course is designed to be flexible when evidencing students’ analysis. We are able to make adaptations to meet the needs of our students.

Assessment & Examination

All assessments are skills based. 40% of all work is externally examined. BTEC includes some written components, which are thoroughly taught and prepared ahead of the assessment.

Future Prospects

In the last few years we have had 100% progression onto degree courses or employment in design related subjects including: Architecture, Fashion, Media, Illustration, Product Design, Film, Photography, Graphics and Fine Art. We have developed links with foundation colleges who are able to recommend pathways into higher education.
