Year 12 Geography

Course Outline:

Geography is for students who are curious about the way the earth works, and how human activities and physical processes interact and change each other. If you enjoy debating, considering different attitudes and questioning the equality of our world then you will thrive in this subject.

The Geography A-level course is split into 2 areas:

  • Physical: Tectonic Processes and Hazards, Coastal Landscapes, The Water and Carbon Cycles
  • Human: Global Governance, Changing Places, Resource Security
  • Independent Investigation: Coursework that has a focus on a topic of your choice, 3000-4000 words.

Assessment and Examinations

  • Paper 1: Physical Geography. Written examination, 40% of the qualification.
  • Paper 2: Human Geography. Written examination, 40% of the qualification.
  • Coursework: Non-Examined Assessment A-level independent investigation, 20% of the qualification.

Course Outline

  • Physical: Tectonic Processes and Hazards, Coastal Landscapes, The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity, The Carbon Cycle and Energy Insecurity.
  • Human: Globalisation, Shaping Places, Superpowers, Global Development and Connections.
  • Synoptic: You will be provided with a range of resources to study and analyse, interpret and explain, as well as drawing upon knowledge from across the rest of the Geography course in your answers.
  • Independent Investigation: Coursework that has a focus on a topic of your choice, 3000-4000 words.

Assessment and Examinations

  • Paper 1: Physical Geography. Written examination, 30% of the qualification.
  • Paper 2: Human Geography. Written examination, 30% of the qualification.
  • Paper 3: Synoptic Investigation of a Geographical Issue. Written examination, 20% of the qualification.

Coursework: Non-Examined Assessment A-level independent investigation, 20% of the qualification.
