Year 9 Careers & Skills Programme
About the Empower project
The Empower Project supports a selected group of Year 9 students to explore the world of work, build essential skills, and gain early insight into future pathways. Delivered in partnership with Islington Council, the programme includes 1:1 mentoring with Fiona, who guides students through future choices including college and sixth‑form applications.
What the programme offers
- Regular careers and skills sessions in school
- One workplace visit per term
- One skills‑building workshop per term
- Opportunities to meet professionals from a range of industries
- Development of confidence, communication, teamwork and adaptability
- Exposure to fast‑growing sectors such as the Green Economy, Creative Production, Sustainability, Technology, and Transport
How students are selected
The programme prioritises students who would benefit most from additional guidance and real‑world exposure, including those who are eligible for the Pupil Premium, those facing barriers to accessing opportunities, and those who show strong potential but may need extra support to thrive. The aim is to ensure the Empower Project has the greatest impact by offering targeted, meaningful experiences to students who will engage fully and benefit significantly from the programme.
Where We Have Been
LNER – King’s Cross
Students explored the rail industry through a behind‑the‑scenes tour of King’s Cross Station. They met staff from digital, operations, customer service and station management, learned how trains are coordinated, and discovered apprenticeship pathways within the transport sector.
Havas Village London
Students visited one of the world’s leading creative communications groups. They toured the Pancras Square HQ, met professionals from HR, DEI and creative teams, and took part in a hands-on challenge designing an event concept for a real client. The experience strengthened teamwork, creativity and presentation skills.
Where We’re Going Next
GLL (Better Leisure Centres)
Students will take part in a workplace visit and tennis activity with GLL, the UK’s largest leisure and cultural services provider. They will explore careers in sport, leisure and community engagement, and take part in a workshop designing ways to encourage local residents to participate in sports activities.
Why Empower Matters
The Empower Project helps students:
- Discover new interests and career possibilities
