Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) program at City of London Academy Highbury Grove offers our students a unique opportunity to develop essential life skills, engage with their community, and embark on exciting challenges. This prestigious award encourages young people aged 14 to 24 to step outside their comfort zones and realize their full potential.

Award level offered

At Highbury Grove we currently offer the Bronze and Silver award to our students. These awards consist of four sections:

  1. Volunteering: Students contribute to community projects, helping others and making a positive impact. Helping at a local charity or community organization. Assisting in a youth group or mentoring younger students; Volunteering at an animal shelter; Participating in environmental conservation projects
  2. Physical: Participants improve their fitness through sports or physical activities they enjoy.
  3. Skills: Students learn a new practical skill or enhance an existing talent, fostering personal growth. (Learning a musical instrument or taking singing lessons, Cooking or baking; Photography; Coding or computer programming)
  4. Expedition: Together with their peers, participants plan and embark on an adventurous journey, enhancing teamwork and leadership skills.

Benefits of participation

The DofE Award provides invaluable experiences that help our students develop resilience, confidence, and key life skills such as teamwork and leadership. Completing the award is not only a significant personal achievement but also extremely beneficial for students’ UCAS personal statements and CVs, enhancing their profiles for university applications and future career opportunities.

How to get involved

Students at City of London Academy Highbury Grove can enrol in the Duke of Edinburgh Award program by speaking with Mr. Moran in the PE department on the first floor. Whether you’re looking to explore the outdoors, give back to the community, or discover new skills, the DofE Award is a rewarding journey that empowers you to thrive.

Enrolment cost

The enrolment cost for the Duke of Edinburgh Award is £50 for Bronze & £150 for Silver. This fee covers the registration and resources needed for participation in the program. Any questions regarding school subsided registration fees please speak to Mr Moran.

Funding to ensure equity of opportunity

We as a school understand that enrolment costs may be a barrier to participation. If you fit any of the following criteria, we can offer funding to ensure you can participate in the Duke of Edinburgh program.

  • Young people whose first language is not English, Welsh or Gaelic
  • Those who have additional needs
  • Those who receive Free School Meals (FSM)
  • Those who are eligible for Pupil Premium (PP)
  • Young people at risk of exclusion from education
  • Those who are looked after or in care
  • Young people who are responsible for caring for someone else
  • Asylum seekers/Refugees
