Trinity Laban Double Bass Workshop
Published: Mon 22 September 2025Our talented double bass students recently had the exciting opportunity to take part in a special workshop hosted by Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, led by the acclaimed double bassist Valentina Ciardelli. The session offered students a unique musical journey into the world of Turandot, the famous opera by Giacomo Puccini. Unlike most operas, Turandot features the double bass not just as part of the orchestra, but as a powerful lead instrument—showcasing its expressive range and versatility.
Throughout the workshop, students explored a variety of advanced playing techniques and musical interpretations inspired by Puccini’s dramatic score. Under Valentina’s expert guidance, they delved into the opera’s central mysteries—the three enigmas of Turandot—and discovered how music can bring storytelling, character, and emotion vividly to life.
The experience was both inspiring and educational, giving students a deeper appreciation for the double bass and its remarkable potential in orchestral and solo performance.
