Science Week at Highbury Grove:Innovation, Exploration, and Excitement!

From Monday 9 to Friday 13 March, Highbury Grove came alive with curiosity, creativity, and cutting-edge thinking as we celebrated our annual Science Week! Packed with hands-on activities, friendly competition, and fascinating discoveries, students across the school had the chance to truly experience science in action.

In lessons, our Year 7 to Year 9 students became engineers, working collaboratively in teams to design and build their very own balloon-powered cars using recycled materials. Armed with plastic bottles, straws, and milk tops, students embraced the challenge of creating vehicles that could travel the furthest distance. By applying their understanding of Newton’s Third Law—that every force has an equal and opposite reaction—they experimented, refined, and raced their creations with impressive results. The classroom buzzed with excitement as designs evolved and distances increased!

The learning didn’t stop when the bell rang. After school, Mr Prior led a group of enthusiastic students in designing and launching water rockets, sending them soaring high into the sky—an unforgettable demonstration of physics in motion.

Meanwhile, Miss Hooper and Miss Richmond guided students through the fascinating world of biology with a hands-on sheep’s eye dissection. Students carefully explored the structure of the eye, even removing the lens to better understand how vision works—an eye-opening experience in every sense!

Adding to the excitement, Mr Burke worked with aspiring electricians on electronics and robotics, supported by some of our talented sixth formers. Students explored circuits, problem-solving, and programming, gaining valuable skills in one of today’s fastest-growing fields.

Science Week was a fantastic celebration of curiosity, teamwork, and discovery. From engineering challenges to biological exploration and technological innovation, our students truly embraced the spirit of scientific inquiry. We can’t wait to see what they’ll discover next!
