Friday 13th wasn’t unlucky at Highbury Grove this year as we welcomed Great Britain U18 basketball player Derrelle Desire for an inspiring and memorable visit. As part of his time with us, Derrelle shared his personal journey to becoming a national team player, giving students insight into the dedication, hard work, and perseverance it takes to reach the elite level of basketball.
Speaking to a captivated audience, Derrelle emphasised the importance of resilience and maintaining a strong work ethic, both on and off the court. He spoke candidly about the challenges he faced, including balancing academics with a demanding training schedule and overcoming obstacles that tested his determination. His message was clear: success in sports, just like in life, comes from passion, discipline, and a refusal to give up when things get tough.
After his talk, Derrelle joined the 6th form Basketball Academy for a high-energy training session. The Academy players had the unique opportunity to train alongside one of the nation’s top young talents, and it was an unforgettable experience. With drills focused on defence, ball-handling, and game situations, Derrelle not only showcased his own skills but also took time to mentor and guide the players, offering tips on improving their game.
