Students bring sustainable fashion to life
Published: Mon 3 August 2026Highbury Grove students Eljay and Sylvie have been recognised for their inspiring Fashion Club, an initiative that encouraged fellow pupils to give unwanted clothing a new lease of life while helping to reduce textile waste.
Their story, in their words…
We wanted to help their fellow pupils have the opportunity to save money whilst saving clothes from landfill, therefore reducing the negative impact of fast fashion on the environment. We conceived and ran the Tailoring Up-cycling Club where students could repurpose and reimagine their old clothes or select from those donated by other students and teachers.
The project culminated in a Fashion Showcase during the school’s Music and Art Open Evening, where students proudly presented their creations to an audience of parents, staff and pupils. The event featured a runway-style display of upcycled garments, with Sylvie introducing the club and participants sharing the inspiration behind their designs, while Eljay oversaw the stage production.
Following the success of the club, the team hopes to continue the initiative next term, giving even more students the opportunity to develop creative skills and make a positive impact on the environment.
